June 6 Carson City NV!

Great Carson City Lit Fest

2014 marks the inaugural year for the Great Carson City Lit Fest. It was conceived by bestselling author, Ellen Hopkins, as a way to spark a love of all things artistic—music, visual art, cooking, performance poetry, theater, dance, storytelling and most of all, great literature—in her hometown. “I’ve participated in book festivals near and far,” Ellen says. “Carson City has every bit as much to offer as any of the places I’ve visited. Why not build something amazing here? My goal is to see this grow into a book festival that will rival any in the country.”

In 2012, Hopkins founded Ventana Sierra Youth Housing and Resource Initiative (www.ventanasierra.org), a nonprofit whose mission is to help youth-in-need into safe housing and working toward career goals through higher education and the arts. The initiative’s major 2013 fundraiser was a writers conference, with workshops aimed toward more experienced writers, looking to fine-tune their skills.

This year, the Ventana Sierra Advanced Writing Workshop remains (www.ventanasierraworkshops.com), hosted by the Carson City Public Library, but right across the street in beautiful Mills Park will be a variety of entertainments, food and vendors. Most events are free and open to everyone, with activities designed to please the entire family, from toddlers to octogenarians (younger and older are most welcome, too).

With a lot of help from her friends in the publishing world, Ellen has built an eclectic roster of authors, poets, memoirists, and storytellers, eager to share their work and knowledge with you. You’ll also enjoy book sales and signings, a battle of the bands, a children’s arts & crafts tent, cooking demonstrations by internationally acclaimed Kid Chef Eliana, and vendor booths with comics, art, jewelry, and much, much more. Plus ticketed events including an evening of world class slam poetry, and two encore performances of the stage adaptation of Hopkins’ first novel, Crank. Details on the “Ticketed Events” page on this website.

On May 30th, 2014, join us at Branx in SE Portland for a night of dancing and celebration, featuring Pyrotense, Alex Bradley, Dope Boy, and Morgue Boss to benefit CRRH and the fight to end marijuana prohibition in Oregon. Tickets are $15 dollars at the door.

Join us as we celebrate GATHER, a night of DJs, performers, and communities coming together to celebrate the tide of legalization, body positivity, creativity, and collectivity.

Pyrotense is a Hard Dance / Hardstyle project started in 2008. They came to be as Chancy combined forces with Tyler in 2011, who was at the time, a well-established hardstyle DJ in the Portland area. Inspired by artists from Daft Punk to Angerfist, and a mix of all flavors of EDM, focused into hard dance music. With their tastes and experience combined, the duo have been grinding out track after track over the last few years. The unique sounds of Pyrotense are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Alex Bradley exploded onto the Portland EDM scene in 2012. Combining bouncy house, dirty electro, 808 bass and breakbeats, he manipulates audiences effortlessly. Within his first year he had played the biggest festivals in Oregon and Montana. A reputation for smashing dancefloors has landed him on lineups with Bassnectar, Nas, Felix Cartal, Figure, Crizzly, DJ Shadow, ill.Gates, Darth & Vader, Cold Blank, Will Sparks, Beats Antique, Paper Diamond, Mimosa, Cosmic Gate, Heavygrinder and many more. The sky is the limit for 2014.
